Ye Bin Leads Team to Win School of Environment Badminton Championship

       On 22 and 23 December 2021, the inaugural “Xinmiao Cup” badminton tournament of the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology, was held smoothly at Runyang Gymnasium. Each squad could be formed by no more than three research groups. Once the notice was released, faculty and students responded enthusiastically. Eleven teams comprising ninety-seven players registered, setting a new participation record for school-level sports events. After round-robin pools, semifinals and finals, the team led by Dr. Ye Bin—“Team Julie”—battled through to the top four and ultimately claimed the championship.

       Evening of 22 December,the eleven teams were divided into four groups for round-robin play. Mixed doubles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, women’s singles and men’s singles were contested to decide the four semifinalists. By draw, “Team Julie,” “Just Do It Team” and “Nan Yu Squad” were placed in the same group, with the top point earner advancing. Amid loud cheering, the three teams engaged in intense matches. Against both “Just Do It” and “Nan Yu Squad,” “Team Julie,” spearheaded by Dr. Ye Bin, swept every encounter 3–0 and progressed to the semifinals.

      Evening of 23 December,semifinals and finals determined final standings. In the semifinal, “Team Julie” faced “Dashan Team.” After four events the score was tied 2–2. The decisive men’s singles would decide who fought for gold and who played for bronze. Carrying the team’s hopes, Dr. Ye Bin overcame pressure and turned the tide, winning 25–17 to send “Team Julie” into the championship match.

 

       The final arrived, “Team Julie” versus “Rain So Lovely Team.” Order of play remained mixed doubles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, women’s singles, men’s singles—best of five events, each event best of three games to 21 points. Elite clashes test technique, stamina and nerves. Both sides fought fiercely, sweat pouring, errors minimized. With the crowd roaring, the atmosphere peaked. After taking mixed doubles and men’s doubles, “Team Julie” needed the women’s doubles to clinch the title. Mid-rally, Cui Wenhui of “Team Julie” fell—her ankle twisted. Teammates rushed over, applying ointment and ice. The umpire granted a five-minute medical timeout. Anxiety mounted: substitute or concede? Watching Cui sitting on the floor, the captain opted for a substitute. Cui raised her hand, stood up and insisted she could continue. Under tension, she played through the pain and, with one last rally, secured victory in women’s doubles. Leading 3–0, “Team Julie” defeated “Rain So Lovely Team” to claim the championship. Cheers erupted; players exchanged high-fives. The hard-earned triumph was celebrated by all.

 

       At the closing ceremony, Dean Yang Xin of the School of Environment, Party Secretary Zheng Yi of the School of Environment, and Deputy Party Secretary Chen Hong of the School of Environment came to the venue to present awards to the champions, runners-up, and third-place teams of the competition.

       Meticulously organized by Party Branch Secretary and faculty member Dr. Ye Bin, the “Xinmiao Cup” concluded successfully, with his “Team Julie” capturing the title—a commendable achievement. The tournament ended with a group photograph.
